I think I'm going to go with only salt, otherwise, he would have found out the first time he took a bath that he had a fish tail

leaning towards magical songs [of varying nature] - the one Iranda was teaching Ilona was just a vocal training exercise. She'll teach her later on how to use the songs to heal [which is how Z re-encounters Ilona when he turns 19, but that is another tail (pun intended) for another time]
