Nevermind, a tiny bunny took hold. This happens in the dragoon au we talked about (second one I think):
Ilona looked around curiously at the interior of the previously locked greenhouse. A little thrill of guilt crept up her spine but no one could blame her for being curious, right? After all, it was just full of plants and surely she wouldn't get in trouble so long as she didn't touch anything?
A tiny squeak startled her, making the young woman turn around to see....a mini dragon?
It was tiny, perhaps palm-sized or a little bigger, and a rather pleasing pale cream color. It's tiny clawed feet clung to a branch of some short and flowering tree by her shoulder and it was edging its way ever closer to her, pausing now and then as the branch wavered under its rather delicate weight.
Amazed, and now grateful she'd remembered to close the greenhouse door behind her, Ilona held out a hand to the small dragon. It's yellow eyes eyed her hand for a moment, then it readily took a short hop and landed in her palm. It had more weight than she expected, but was still rather light. With a surprising determination, it began to climb up her arm, using her shirt sleeve to help on its journey up to her shoulder.
Holding still, Ilona was surprised as a similar weight landed on her other shoulder, followed by a sharp chirp. Turning her head carefully, she saw another mini dragon. This one was slightly bigger than the cream one and was a brilliant red color, speckled with flecks of gold on its back and wings. Peering at her with a gaze she hoped was curious and not calculating, she was surprised when it suddenly tilted it's head and stroked its beak (snout? Which was the proper term?) through a loose sprig of her rare, violet colored hair.
She giggled at the odd feeling, jumping a little when it was repeated on her other shoulder. Craning her head back over, Ilona saw the tiny cream repeating the movement, trying to edge its way closer to her neck to really get into her hair. Smiling, Ilona reached back and gently took her clip from her hair, releasing it to fall around and pass her shoulders (and subsequently the mini dragons) in soft waves. The pair squeaked happily and she felt their little beaks combing her hair again, bringing another giggle from her. It was a strange, almost tickling sensation and -ow!
Yelping, Ilona stumbled back at the sudden pain in the side of her head. It was followed by another on the opposing side and she yelped again. Raising her hands to try and swat at the mini dragons, there was a second sharp pain on the first side and the red one flew off her shoulder, a small clump of her hair held triumphantly in its beak. In tears now, she tried to get the cream one off before it could pull out any hair itself, but she was a too late. Like its fellow, it flew off quickly, some of her hair held in its tiny beak like a prize.
Whimpering, Ilona clapped her hands to the side of her head, trying to sooth the pain coming in dull waves from her scalp. More squeaking made her look up and to her horror, there were several mini dragons in the plants now, all of them looking down at her in vested interest. Letting out a cry, she stumbled back, visions of being plucked bald dancing in her head and of course that was when her shoe's heel snapped! Yelping, she started to go down, but a rescue came in a pair of strong arms seizing her around the waist and lifting her off her feet.
Her savior raced the both of them away from the flapping herd (flock? flight?) of hair stealers, their sharp chirps following them all the way to the door. They paused there for only a second, then they were through it and it was quickly shut in tiny reptilian faces. A few 'thumps' let her know some of the minis hadn't been quick enough (or rather, had been flying too quickly) to stop themselves and her rescuer swore.
Looking up, she found herself looking at a young man (a teenager perhaps? dressed in old yet comfortable looking clothes. They were also heavily stained and had more than a few tiny rips here and there. She had an idea where those were from, especially as she saw that his hair was hidden under both a bandana and tucked into a weathered baseball cap. He looked at her suddenly and she found herself staring into the now familiar slitted eyes of a dragoon, just as pale a blue as her employer Aaron's were.
He frowned down at her and pointed at the door, "That was locked for several reasons, you know. You just found out a major one personally."
She blushed and raised her hands to gently touch her scalp, mumbling something of an excuse along the lines of being curious. The guy sighed and looked away from her, trying to peer through the glazed glass, "I've got to check them out now and it's going to take hours to calm them back down."
Ilona apologized, but it felt half-hearted as a worry that one of the mini dragons had been hurt crept into her heart. Part of her felt guilty, another part didn't care, the little hair stealers. Wincing at a new throb of pain, she hesitantly asked, "Why...why did they.."
He answered her swiftly, already reaching for the door again, "To line their nests with it. They love human hair because its soft and it holds heat easily. If I hadn't got you out of there, they would have plucked you bald."
Hand on the handle, he looked at her again, seeming an odd mix of uncomfortable and angry, "Just get back inside and stay in Father's lab for the rest of the day. Leave the exploring for when you get a proper guide."
He ducked back into the greenhouse amid a chorus of chirps and squeaks, closing the door swiftly behind him before she could say anymore. Pouting, Ilona did as he said, not really to follow his orders but more to check the areas where her hair had been removed and make sure the damage wasn't too bad.
It was later that she found out she'd had just had her first encounter with Aaron's youngest child, Peak. It was even longer still before she met him again, the recluse that he was.
